SOUND SYSTEMS DESIGN
Zagreb Arena was constructed to host the World Mens Handball Championships in 2009. The venue also holds music concerts such as Jean Michel Jarre, Tom Jones and Britney Spears.
The arena features a distinctive concrete construction externally and an innovative roof hung from the concrete “ribs”. Internally the venue has been optimised for acoustics. Acoustic modelling was undertaken during the design stage and efficient use of structure and form was combined with surface finishes to provide the acoustic atmosphere within the arena bowl.
Specific acoustic effects have been treated which arise due to the physical size of this type of venue. Innovative acoustic absorption has been incorporated into the roof steels, and numerous elements such as balcony fronts and executive boxes have been designed to achieve an optimum environment. The acoustic design of the venue has been specifically informed by loudspeaker systems used in arena sized productions both for sporting and concert events. Construction details were provided to the main contractor to enable local suppliers and subcontractors to undertake the works.
