Principality Stadium (Millennium Stadium), Cardiff

The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff opened in 1999 to replace the previous National Stadium of Wales. The stadium was the first UK stadium to be designed with a fully retractable roof which has been used on many occasions for both sporting and music events.

Our Senior Acoustic Consultants provided the design services to the client and we were then novated to the main contractor from 1997 to 1999.

Since the stadium opened, we have been commissioned to provide noise management and control for many of the concert events staged at the stadium such as Take That, One Direction and U2.

CLIENT: WRU & HOARE LEA

COMPLETION DATE: 1999

CAPACITY: 74,000

The stadium is renowned for its excellent acoustics both with the roof open and closed and this has been subject of much publicity for the 2014 Six Nations Wales v England game.

Acoustic modelling was employed by our consultants to inform the acoustic design and enhance the atmosphere. Our consultants were involved with the complete design from the environmental noise impact assessment required for planning to the bowl acoustics and the stadium sound system.

The project started at the concept design stage and progressed through the full RIBA design stages to the provision of detailed specifications. We were then novated to the contractor to implement the sound and acoustic design.
